Silky white beaches of Koh Rong Samloem
Welcome to Koh Rong Samloem island – a perfect place to escape the crowds of Angkor Wat and busy Phnom Penh. The most popular islands in Cambodia are Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem located just 4 kilometers apart. While Koh Rong is known as a backpackers’ party central, its sister island of Koh Rong Samloem is much more tranquil and relaxing. Besides beautiful beaches, one of the most amazing thing to do there is to experience glowing plankton. In the dark, just dangle your feet in the water or take a swim and you will be amazed by the bioluminescent plankton show. You can take a quick boat night tour, but it is also possible to see it off the beach as long as there is little light pollution.
There should be no mystery where snakefruit, aka salak, gets its name. This Southeast Asian delicacy grows on certain palm trees and is literally a pain to harvest because of the prickly spikes. Luckily, you won’t have to do it yourself as they can be easily found in local markets. Under the scaly skin you’ll find crunchy pulp that tastes something in between of pineapple and jackfruit. And while we still prefer mangos, snakefruit is always on our shopping lists when travelling in Asia.
